Woman found dead in van with animals and cockroaches

PHOENIX -

Phoenix Police are investigating a bizarre story about a woman found dead in a van with 35 animals and even more bugs.

The family of Lola Mae Stout may have been driving with her body for hours.

12 dogs, 22 cats, and 1 pigeon were found stuffed inside animal crates. Some of the crates were covered in spider webs.

Many of the animals were sick and malnourished, sitting in their own feces among spiders and cockroaches.

Court documents show her husband, Alva Stout, and sons Alan and Gregory Stout, gave conflicting statements about her death.

One of them says the woman was alive when they filled up on gas in Quartzite. Her son Alan Stout says she collapsed in Quartzite but they put her in the van anyway and drove to Phoenix. That's about 120 miles.

The woman had a few medical conditions, including prior strokes, high blood pressure, goiter, and schizophrenia. Right now the men are only arrested on animal abuse.

Many, if not all of the animals will have to be put down due to their poor health, according to an assessment by the Arizona Humane Society.

"We got on scene and it's not uncommon for our EMTs to respond to hoarding cases in a home. What made this so different was the fact that it was a van filled with dozens and dozens of animals, people, feces, debris, cockroaches, spiders, just something we haven't seen to that scope in a very very long time," said Bretta Nelson, AHS.

The investigation is ongoing.
