This Weekend: Mega concerts, festivals, events take over Chicago

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The city is lit up with festival lights and music Friday night and it's bound to take over your world if you are downtown this weekend.

The Square Roots Fest kicked off Friday evening on Lincoln Ave. between Montrose and Wilson. Organizers are asking for a $10 donation. Once inside, it's all about family, friends and folk music.

People who live near the Square Roots Fest say the singing and dancing keeps them coming back.

For the first time in Chicago, the corner of Rush and Hubbard is looking and smelling a lot like the Deep South. Beef Brisket, pulled pork and pork rinds can be found at the Windy City Smoke Out. They started lighting their grills around 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Organizers say they hope this fun is a hit because they want the world to know that Chicago is known for hot dogs, pizza and the Blues. They also want to add barbeque to that list.

Many at the neighborhood festivals say they like the convenience of it all. They didn't have to deal with road closures and traffic to get to the Taste of Chicago this year, but the meals and the music may make them change their minds for the last day.

Also Friday night is Bon Jovial's sold out show at Soldier Field. The band kicks off its U.S. tour in Chicago. The stage is a larger than life replica of a 1959 Buick. Though it's an old school car, but, the band says the stage is a high-tech marvel, including state-of-the-art video screens, robotics, and lighting.
