Flip flops are a summer staple in Arizona, but you may be doing some real damage to your feet if you wear them too much.
For a lot of people, flop flops are their go-to footwear in warm weather, but there's a good reason to limit how much you wear them.
According to the National Foot Health assessment released last year, 78 percent of adults 21 and older have experienced one or more foot problems in their lives.
A common reason, especially during the summer, is flip-flops.
While flip flops may be cool and comfortable, they don't offer the foot support you need.
There's no cushioning, no shock absorption and no stability. This can lead to ankle and insole pain.
Those thong-type flip flops can also rub against your skin and cause ulcerations and sores.
Also, when you have a toe thong, you tend to grip the shoe with your toes to try and keep it on. That alters your gait and puts strain on muscles you don't normally use when you walk in regular shoes.
This doesn't mean you have to walk around the beach in orthopedic shoes. There are some things to look for to chose a "better" sandal that won't be so harmful to your feet.
