Thieves smash truck into pawn shop in Stone Mountain

Posted: Updated:
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -

A pick-up truck backed into the Stone Mountain Pawn & Gun Shop on Rockbridge Road Wednesday morning.

The pawn shop is located in the 4500 block of Rockbridge Road, not far from Allgood Circle in DeKalb County.

Surveillance video outside the pawn shop captured the black pickup truck ramming into the front of the business.

The video shows one of the men with a cap, gloves, and a scarf on his face crawling through the wall and breaking a case with a hammer.

Rick Bryan has owned the shop for two years.  He says all the men got away with is an empty gun case, and they left the truck behind.

This was the third burglary this year for the pawn shop.  Bryan estimates more than $5,000 in damages this time and more than $60,000 from the last two.  He says these crimes have crippled his business.

"I've lost a couple of employees simply based off of the hits. My pawn shop insurance is limited on what they pay on theft because they are soft targets; they don't pay hardly anything," Bryan said.  "I've had to pay a lot out of pocket.  I've lost a couple of employees scaling back and will probably lose another one over this. It's a slow time of year, thousands of dollars this year out of our  bottom line."

Employees spent the day cleaning up the mess left behind.  Bryan says he's not sure why the criminals have targeted his shop, but for now the business goes on.  He has hired an armed guard to watch over the shop at night.

"I've got a couple choices, I can shut this place down, it's been in business 30 years. I hate to do that, it's a well-established business," Bryan said. "Or I can just take matters into my own hands and put somebody in here and have them armed."

Bryan sent out a warning to criminal.

"My message to criminals is real simple, if you come back her next time, it's not going to be the same outcome," Bryan said.

Police say the truck was stolen from DeKalb County. They also say they made an arrest in one of the previous break-ins, but have little information on the thieves from this incident.
