Conditions ripe for thunderstorms, heavy rainfall

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Hot, humid conditions Tuesday could create an unstable air mass that has the potential of developing thunderstorms that threatens heavy rainfall and damaging winds, according to the National Weather Service.

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to spread across northern Illinois Tuesday afternoon and night. The storms, fueled by warm and humid air, also carry the threat of large hail and tornadoes in an area primarily north of Interstate 88 and west of the Fox River Valley.

There will be a lingering chance of thunderstorms Wednesday morning, especially south of Interstate 80. Those storms could produce heavy rainfall.

Storms could return to the area later toward the weekend and into next week, according to the service.
