NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Former Governor Eliot Spitzer is attempting to get on the ballot to run for city comptroller.

Spitzer, who resigned in 2008 after he was caught in a prostitution scandal, is collect petitions to get on the ballot.  He only needs 3,750 signatures to run for comptroller.

Spitzer told Good Day New York on Monday he hopes the public will be able to put the prostitution scandal aside and take him seriously.

"I certainly hope so… it's five years now since I left office… I will make that request every day in public life," said Spitzer.

In an interview with the NY Times, the former Governor said he is "hopeful there will be forgiveness, I am asking for it."

Spitzer's main competition would come from Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, who left the field of mayoral candidates to run for comptroller.

"Many people felt that Scott Stringer would have had this wrapped up until this kind of unexpected turn of events," said Jeanne Zaino, political analyst

The former governor is a multimillionaire and would self-fund his campaign, according to the Post.

He becomes the second New York politician trying to comeback from a sex-scandal in this election cycle. Former senator Anthony Weiner is trying to make a comeback as a candidate for mayor.

Despite Weiner Tweeting lewd images of himself, some polls show he is leading the race for mayor.

"I think that with Weiner's comeback and rise to be in a first place status, it seems that it's given Spitzer some kind of energy," said Zaino.
