Out Of Control Intersection On Philadelphia/Cheltenham Border

Out Of Control Intersection On Philadelphia Border With Cheltenham

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

FOX 29, getting results for nervous neighbors in Philadelphia's Lawndale section.

They're tired of bracing for impact every time a vehicle comes tooling through the dangerous intersection near their homes.

The intersection in question is on the border of Philadelphia and Cheltenham Township, where Tookany Creek Parkway becomes Crescentville Road, at Cheltenham Avenue.

The intersection forces southbound drivers on Tookany Creek to curve left as they pass Cheltenham Avenue onto Crescentville Road. Not everyone makes it.

PennDot reports 17 accidents involving personal injury, property damage, or both, from 2008, through 2012.

That doesn't even include recent crashes.

"That's what we talking about. That's what we talking about 'round here," says a witness last Saturday when a six car fender bender took place while Fox 29 was on the scene to report on a crash the night before.

FOX 29 did the first report several weeks ago, when an out-of-control driver left the road, drove across front lawns and damaged several patios.

While checking out the intersection for myself, I reached out to the city Streets Department.

They've promised to conduct a traffic study of the intersection to see what can be done to make it safer.

An inspector is due out on Wednesday to begin photographing the site.

Then I called PennDot.

It turns out, 10 of those 17 reported accidents, involved a vehicle hitting a fixed object, which suggests cars leaving the road and striking guardrails, curbs, and utility poles.

PennDot experts say that number seems high for a signalized intersection.

So I asked, could it be the road design is off-kilter?

"They're sliding off the road, going off the road. Typically, a lot of times they're associated with aggressive driving, with driver error- maybe in combination with geometry," said ________ "In other cases it could mean that some signing or some other things maybe aren't in place that should be. Maybe weren't, but aren't anymore."
