Detroit City Council will pick new president to replace Pugh

Posted: Updated:

The Detroit City Council will pick a new council president to replace Charles Pugh, but the vote will not come until next week.

Pugh has been missing for several days and his absence could be considered an ethics violation if it is determined that Pugh willfully neglected his duties.

At a meeting this morning, a representative of the city's law department told the council that Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr's recent order stripping Pugh of his pay and responsibilities also officially vacates the office of council president.

Pugh can remain a member of the council under Orr's order, but council members can select someone else to be president.

Council members also tabled the decision to formally remove Pugh until next week.  The council is looking for legal clarification before it proceeds in the matter.

The council will also choose a new president pro tem to replace Gary Brown, who now works for Orr's office.

The votes are expected to take place on Tuesday, July 9 and Fox 2 cameras will be there to record the event and stream it live to this website.
