SEPTA Fare Increases Starting Monday

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

UPenn sophomore Pearl Li is walking away with her SEPTA tokens after a lengthy battle to get them.

"It took me a while because everywhere I went the machines were sold out," remarked Li.

She's like many mass transit users that spent the weekend grabbing what's left of current rates before Monday's hike in fares kick in.

"I'm not very happy," says Li.

Jackie Patterson of Southwest Philadelphia isn't happy about it either.

"I've been using SEPTA as long as SEPTA has been running," she says.

She will be shelling out more coin to ride trolleys to and from center city.

"I love riding SEPTA. My family's worked for SEPTA and I don't know what we'd do without them but we really just can't take this steep fare," says Patterson.

Anyone using buses, subways, and trolleys will be paying a quarter more to ride: at $2.25. And tokens will be up to $1.80 a piece. Weekly Trans Passes jump two bucks to $24, and monthly passes will cost you 91 bucks.

"I don't know what's worse. Gas prices or SEPTA," says Temptresse Browne.

The SEPTA surge is designed to pay for things like technology upgrades across the system, but it's leaving some people like Temptresse Browne of South Philly unsure of how to make ends meet in times that seem to be getting harder.

"Who got that type of money? I'm literally struggling as it is! Now you want to raise the prices by tomorrow?"

But others say they will just have to make do, no matter how much rougher things get.

"I have enough money to do for myself but it just gets a little tougher," says another customer.
