Phoenicians head north to escape the heat

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Some people hit their pools, some stay in air conditioned buildings, while others just get out of town.  That may be the best thing to do to avoid the heat.

It's about 30 degrees cooler in Flagstaff and it feels amazing.  As of 9 p.m. Friday, it was 109 degrees in Phoenix and 79 degrees in Flagstaff.

We had our windows rolled down and the air conditioner off as we drove around town.

Getting there was the hard part.

It was a mass exodus along Interstate 17 as Phoenicians headed up north to escape the heat.

"I need to get out of town," said Carrie Kozakiewicz.

I-17 was backed up for miles after a crash blocked one lane.  What should have been a two hour trip to Flagstaff turned out to be four hours on the road.  Some cars didn't make it.

"We had a lot of heat -- trying to get out of the heat because we were stuck in that traffic.. that accident for a long time and I'm still really hot," said Carrie.

Flagstaff hotel rooms are filling up fast and some hotels are already sold out.

"It's so much better than Phoenix," aid Angeleah Huggins.

Streets busy, restaurants packed as thousands said goodbye to triple digit temperatures this weekend by cooling off up north.

"It's much better.. you actually have a breeze that's not melting your skin off," said Josiah Huggins.

Bobby Baird added, "It's definitely nice to get out of the heat.. it's only like 10 degrees, but it's still pretty awesome."

And on the way to Flagstaff, we did see some clouds and lightning near Prescott.  That lightning started a few small fires.  Thankfully, they were extinguished.
