Staying cool in hot weather: Phoenix Fire Dept. tests new cooling glove

PHOENIX -

The intense flames combined with excessive heat -- is brutal for crews on the front lines, as you can imagine.

Phoenix firefighters are testing a new cooling glove...it's created by Stanford biologists and the glove is already being used by sports teams in California -- now fire crews here want to see how it helps them recharge in triple digit heat.

Firefighters now have a helping hand keeping them cool.

"You can feel the suction create a seal and what it does is cool water that come in on my wrist and hand you feel that right away chilling effect radiating up my arms," said Luke Anderson.

The CoreControl glove removes heat while cooling blood.

"We are trying a new method -- cooling from the core out instead of cooling from outside in with air conditioning or cool mist -- we are going to cool by uses what we have in the palm of our hands special radiators," said Anderson.

Fire gear can reach extreme temperatures.  Firefighters typically remove gear while they cool down, but with the glove, officials say they won't have to.

"This device makes it so you don't have to go indoors, you don't have to take your equipment on glove and from there, start cooling our core," said Anderson.  "Our rehab trucks are there, you are cooling yourself off with water misting systems -- all you can find -- so this unique thing if they asked me to sign off on it, I would say absolutely yes."

Firefighters trying out the device saw results fast.

"We know it's cooling our core because we can see that our firefighters have stopped sweating with three to five minutes of the unit being on hand."

"I can imagine if you're really overheated, this is going to feel so good."

PFD will not use the glove for heat emergencies.  They say they'll follow the typical protocols.
