Storm chasers in training

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A shocking streak of lightning danced across ominous skies in New Jersey Thursday evening. The storm clouds were deep, dark pockets of powerful weather rolling across the state. It created nasty, dangerous conditions along Route 46 in Wayne.

With Tornado Watches issued in several counties of the Garden State, most people will follow appropriate safety advice and take shelter.

But some people track and follow these events first hand. Michael Colbert and a handful of students at SUNY Stony Brook are studying to potentially chase storms like the ones we saw in New Jersey. The students are learning from the National Science Foundation and its mobile Doppler vehicle during a recent visit. They are doing it to learn about storms and better predict future storms.

But chasing storms is for obvious reasons very dangerous and deadly. Three storm chasers lost their lives during recent tornadoes in Oklahoma.

Foundation scientist Rachel Humphrey knows the risks but said information learned from the brave men and women who find and follow the funnel clouds benefits us all.
