After spending the past 55 years together, Karen Bailey and Nelda Majors are now one step closer to having their relationship legally recognized.

"We felt like it was going to happen this way, but not knowing still there's that doubt," said Karen.

Nelda adds, "And then when that actually happened.. here I am crying you know.  But anyway it was exciting. I never thought I'd see a day like this in my life."

Nelda and Karen kept their relationship secret until a few years ago.

In March, they spoke at a marriage equality rally in Washington, D.C. on the steps of the Supreme Court as the justices took up the issue of same sex marriage.

"After we spoke, young people were coming up and hugging our necks and telling us thank you so much for opening this door for us," said Karen.

Same-sex marriage is still illegal in Arizona, but with the Supreme Court striking down the defense of marriage act on Wednesday, Karen and Nelda say they plan on getting married in one of the states where it is legal.

"We would then be qualified for the federal laws and we have to think about that, that's important," said Nelda.

"Even if you're not getting everything you want all at once, people are still talking about it and the movement is still there -- I don't think it will stop," said Karen.

"We can't give up -- we've got to keep trying to change each state as we can. You know we want to do that," said Nelda.
