Texas lawmaker tries to impeach UT system regent

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A powerful Texas House Republican wants to remove a University of Texas System regent, accusing him of interfering with the system's flagship Austin campus and its management.

State. Rep. Jim Pitts of Waxahachie, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, filed a resolution Monday seeking the impeachment of Regent Wallace Hall of Dallas.

Pitts has objected to Hall's continued use of massive open records requests for emails and other documents searching for information from and about campus President Bill Powers, other school officials and legislators.

Hall was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry. The resolution would allow the House to form a committee to investigate Hall, but it would be up to the Senate to remove him.

Hall did not immediately respond to an email to UT System offices seeking comment.
