I-35 re-opens following 18-wheeler fire

Posted: Updated:

The southbound lanes of I-35 opened back up near Riverside around 9 p.m. Monday night after being closed when an 18-wheeler caught on fire.

They were closed for more than eight hours while authorities investigated and cleaned up.

The truck, which was carrying pork bellies, was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on the scene around 12:30 p.m.

The driver was able to get out of the vehicle safely before the fire consumed the truck. But one of the driver's dogs died in the fire.

Authorities say the fire was probably caused by a mechanical malfunction.
