Scorpion safety and prevention

PHOENIX -

It's that time of year. It's hot and scorpions are out and about. How do you keep them out of your house? And what do you do if one of them stings you?

Seal cracks in your home. Spray with insecticide.

There is a way to catch scorpions if you run across one. It's called the scorpion bug grabber. Hardware stores carry them. The sticky paper catches them, just like that.

If you've just moved to the valley of the sun from Kentucky, scorpions are a new thing. Jasmine Redd and Gerard Barber are very happy with their new home near 35th Avenue and Southern.

But not happy about the bark scorpion that found its way into their bed.

"I was asleep and I felt something on my arm, jerked it and felt something come off," says Jasmine Redd. "I felt like I had been stung by a bee at first."

"Yeah it was right there. At first it was really inflamed," says Gerard Barber.

There is no question a scorpion sting is painful. But there is a little bit of good. It is not going to kill you.

"The most important thing to remember is stay calm and unless you are very very young, under a year old, I can say with certainty there have been almost no deaths reported," says Dr. Frank Lovecchio, Banner Poison and Drug Information Center

The pain should ease in a couple hours, although sometimes it takes longer.

"It is not going to make us move but we will exterminate and do everything we can to keep them out of the house," says Barber.

To see scorpions, especially at night, use a black light flashlight. Hardware stores have them. The light lights up scorpions the color of a tennis ball, so you can see them and catch them.
