Deacon, Basketball Coach Charged With Possessing Child Porn

PARKSIDE, Pa. -

The Delaware County District Attorney's Office and Parkside Police say 59-year old Steven Almond was downloading and sharing child pornography over the Internet.

Almond turned himself into authorities Thursday morning sending fear and concern throughout his neighborhood on West Forrestview Drive.

"It saddens me. We have children. There are about 30 children that play on our block everyday," said neighbor Haneefah Burrell.

Investigators searched Almond's home on June 13th. They say he admitted to having files of teen porn on his computer and that he believed the youngest child on it was around 13 to 14 years old.

But perhaps the most shocking admission is that investigators say Almond told them he knew it was illegal to pay for child pornography but he did not think it was illegal to download it because "it's free and it is a public domain."

"I do not buy that he did not know it was illegal because even if it's not illegal, it's immoral. It's sick and it's twisted," said Burrell, whose youngest child is 5 years old.

Investigators say some of the victims in the videos were younger than that. Almond told investigators he's a deacon at a church and coaches basketball with Upward Bound Basketball League.

He claims not to have had inappropriate contact with children.

"My wife is seven months pregnant," said neighbor Kevin Bell, who is disturbed to hear what Almond is accused of.

Bell is happy to hear Almond was caught and hopes he doesn't return to the neighborhood.

"It's not something you want to have in general but especially living next door to you," said Bell.

A call to the pastor of Middletown Presbyterian Church were Almond is allegedly a deacon was not returned.

In the meantime, Almond is being held at the Delaware County Prison on $350,000 cash bail.
