Talker: Study finds only 30 percent of US workers are engaged in their jobs

How do you feel about your job? A study, by Gallup, found most people are not exactly loving them.

The study looked at U.S. workers from 2010 to 2012 and found there are three types of workers.

"Engaged" workers feel a passion and a connection to their employers. "Non-engaged" workers have basically checked-out of their jobs. They're putting in time, but not much energy.

The third group is beyond checked-out. "Actively disengaged" workers are unhappy at work and act unhappy at work every day. These workers undermine the accomplishments of co-workers.

Nationally, the study found 30 percent of workers are "engaged" in their jobs, 52 percent are "not engaged," and 18 percent are "actively-disengaged."

Those top two numbers, put together, mean 70 percent of American workers are giving less than their best effort at work.

Illinois workers look even less engaged than the national average. 28 percent of workers here were found to be "engaged" in their jobs. That ranks 46th out of the 50 states.

29 percent of Indiana workers were "engaged." That's 41st in the country.

The most "engaged" state is Louisiana, at 37 percent.

In the "actively disengaged" category, Illinois is ninth worst at 20 percent and Indiana ranks right at the national average: 18 percent.

A separate, more up-to-date survey found national employee disengagement rose even higher this spring -- all the way to 32 percent.

Workers who are actively disengaged are said to cost the U.S. economy $450-$550 billion per year in productivity.
