New details were released on the teaching hospital that will be built for the newly-formed Dell Medical School at UT.
The new hospital slated to open in 2017 will be built on land across from UMC Brackenridge on 15th Street and will take over Brackenridge's role in community healthcare.
Brackenridge will still be used as an educational center for students but most of its capabilities will be moved to the new location.
So far, it appears that the Frank Erwin Center will not be torn down for construction of the new facility, but that may change in the future.
Apart from the educational and medical benefits, the new teaching facility will affect more areas across the community.
"This is extremely critical. I think when we talk about the medical complex being created in this quadrant, the kinds of businesses that will get spun off from that create jobs. The research that will get done... all of that is gonna serve the community very, very well for the next quarter-century, or beyond, so we're really excited about that," President and CEO of Seton Healthcare Family, Jesus Garza said.
The new facility will be built as a partnership between the University of Texas, Seton Healthcare Network, and Central Health, the county's health care district.
