DOJ To Spearhead Review Of Police-Involved Shootings

DOJ To Spearhead Review Of Police-Involved Shootings

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Earlier this spring, Philadelphia police were involved in seven shootings in seven days.

At the time, Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey released a statement that read in part, "My primary concern is the sanctity of life equally for members of this department and the public we serve. At no point am I looking to compromise the safety of our officers; however, researching and implementing the best practices to be used by the department is essential."

He also wanted the U.S. Justice Department to get involved and review the police department's use of deadly force.

On Tuesday, we learned through a news release that Ramsey met with that department and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) in Washington, DC.  The commissioner was joined by First Deputy Commissioner Richard Ross and Deputy Commissioner Nola Joyce.

Going forward, this collaborative effort between all departments will last for approximately 18 months, officials say. The goal is to produce an independent review of the recent police-involved shootings.

The next step will be a second meeting to discuss further details of the review process. A team from COPS will also pay a visit to Philadelphia in late July for a series of meetings.

Ramsey expressed his gratitude for the DOJ and said he looks forward to his department's involvement in the review process.

Mayor Michael Nutter also expressed his appreciation of the partnership.
