NYC Mayor's Message: Stop Wasting Food!

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK, NY -

First it was a ban on soda, but now New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has a new message: stop wasting food!

He wants New Yorkers to recycle their wasted food scraps and turn them into fuel.

It's part of a food recycling pilot program.

People living in the city's compost high-rises separate their food scraps into a bin before emptying the container into a larger bucket in the communal trash room.

The Mayor's office estimates that the city spends $96 million dollars every year-just stashing food in landfills.

Composting a bit of some of that waste would save millions and benefit the environment.

Bloomberg wants the entire city on board by 2016.
