Pennsylvania, New Jersey Workers Hate Going To Work, Gallup Says

Posted: Updated:

Do you love your job? Or do you count down the hours until happy hour? Are you one of those who steals office supplies from the supply closet?

Gallup, one of the biggest polling institutions, has a way of measuring workplace satisfaction. According to Gallup, workers fall into three categories:

"Engaged" workers feel passion and love their jobs. "Not engaged" workers essentially sleepwalk through their day until they get off. "Actively disengaged workers" hate their jobs and actively go around making it difficult for others.

Every two years, Gallup does a "State of The American Workplace" poll.

24/7 Wall St, a financial news and opinion operation, analyzed the 2010-2012 Gallup report and compiled a list of the 10 states in the US with the highest number of "actively disengaged workers."

Louisiana leads the country with the highest percentage of engaged workers at 37%.

At the opposite end of the engagement spectrum, more than one in five (21%) workers in Rhode Island are actively disengaged.

You'll see two local states in the listing of those 10 states:

10. West Virginia

9. Illinois

8. Michigan

7. New York

6. Vermont

5. Kentucky

4. Pennsylvania

3. New Jersey

2. Connecticut

1. Rhode Island

According to Gallup, 20% of Pennsylvanians report they're actively disengaged from their jobs. Only 28.6% surveyed reported they were engaged with their jobs. Despite a 2012 unemployment rate of 7.9% (21st highest), the work environment is ranked the 17th worst.

In New Jersey it was also 20% workers surveyed being actively disengaged. Only 28.3% (9th lowest) report being engaged. With a 2012 unemployment rate of 9.5% (5th highest) the work environment is ranked 2nd worst.
