Car Crash Patient Attacked Philly Paramedics, Union Says

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Two paramedics were injured Monday morning when a patient apparently attacked them and tried to steal a fire engine.

The incident was reported after a response to a motor vehicle crash scene, preliminarily reported to be at West Berkley and Morris streets, around 5:30 a.m. Monday.

A union spokesman says the paramedics were assaulted at 19th Street and Erie Avenue while transporting one patient to a hospital.

According to the union, the patient chased a female paramedic out of the ambulance and down the street, then threw an oxygen bottle at a fire engine window before trying to jump in the driver's seat of the engine.

That's when firefighters dragged the patient out, the union spokesman says, and police used a stun device on the patient.

Bill Gault, president of International Association of Firefighters Local 22, issued a statement later on Monday saying the "chaotic early morning incident … demonstrates the dangers our union brothers and sisters face daily in the City of Philadelphia."

Gault added, "It appears that our paramedics will be alright. Were it not for their quick thinking, valor and training, the situation could have been much worse. This criminal matter is now in the hands of the police department."
