They come from all over the nation for this...bikers. And they're here for the 2013 Republic of Texas Biker Rally.

Travis and Lynne Dotson rode all the way from Abilene...something they've been doing for a long time.

"Six, seven now. Yeah. I mean all together between the both of us about 20 years," they said.

But with thousands of motorcycles in town, traffic can get a little hairy and accidents happen.

The Dotsons say being constantly alert is key.

"Obey the warning signs and when it says slow down and try to keep your distance from traffic. Over the years you learn don't sit up next to a car that can't see you. You know, you don't want to be in their blind spot," they said.

Lt. Robert Richman with Austin Police says their "No Refusal" DWI initiative begins Friday night at 9 and goes through 5 AM Sunday morning.

They will also be looking out for aggressive and distracted driving.

"These are things like speeding and not paying attention, following too closely. People who are traveling on roadways who are not really paying attention, moving right or left that's unsafe. Causing traffic type issues that would normally cause collisions. So we have our officers out there looking for those things and they are citing people for those," Richman said.

Richman encourages drivers to keep an eye out.

"Just be very cognizant that there's a lot of motorcycles out there -- that motorcycles are kind of hard to see at times," Richman said.

Warren Hassinger with Austin and Travis County EMS says there were three fatalities during last year's ROT Rally weekend.

As of Friday afternoon there were six reported motorcycle incidents including one fatality early Thursday morning.

"I noticed that alcohol was involved on at least one of these incidents and several of the riders weren't wearing helmets. You know, those motorcycles and alcohol probably don't mix well. You need to keep that thought in mind and wear a helmet if at all possible because it's certainly gonna help you in the event of a crash," Hassinger said.
