Philly School District Sends Out More Layoff Notices

PHILADELPHIA -

Protesters hit the streets of Center City on Friday afternoon in an effort to try and save thousands of school district jobs.

"Save our schools! SOS! Save our schools!" shouted the parents, teachers, students, and faith leaders all marching from LOVE Park down to Gov. Tom Corbett's Philadelphia office on Broad Street.

They're demanding the state restore almost $300 million in state education funding.

Last week, nearly 3,800 school employees were given their pink slips as part of the district's so-called "doomsday budget".

Late Friday afternoon, the Philadelphia School District released a statement saying that it is in the process of laying off 76 more employees. These employees work in the central and regional administrative offices.

According to the school district, a total of 137 positions are being eliminated.

The school district is trying to close a whopping $304 million deficit and reduction in federal loan grants.

FOX 29's Omari Fleming has more details in the above video report from the site of Friday's protest.
