The Austin Police Department will have several initiatives
going on this weekend to keep attendees of the Republic of Texas Rally, and
drivers, safe this weekend.
Motorcycles will be upfront and present this weekend around
Austin, and authorities realize they make good targets for potential thieves.
Because of this, undercover officers will be out among the crowds looking for
anyone suspicious who might be trying to steal motorcycles.
"We will be looking for suspicious people who might be
loitering around motorcycles, loading them into trailers, putting themselves
with motorcycles where they don't fit," said Detective Earl Bolls, with the
Austin Police Department.
Detective Bolls also told FOX 7 that if you can deter a
thief for about 90 seconds it is likely they will move onto another target, so
rally attendees should consider covering their motorcycles.
According to authorities, most motorcycle thefts occur when
the ignition is shut off, but not locked.
