Court OKs October Special Election For Senate In NJ

TRENTON, N.J. -

A special election to replace late U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey can be held this October, a state court has ruled.

Thursday's ruling in favor of Gov. Chris Christie's scheduling puts the special election on the calendar for Oct. 16.

But the ruling could be appealed.

Some Democrats think it should be held on Nov. 5, the day voters head to polls for general elections.

Four Democrats and two Republicans have filed petitions to run to complete Lautenberg's term.

Early polls show Newark Mayor Cory Booker, a Democrat, as the front runner.

Lautenberg died last week at the age of 89.
