Tourist from Spain dies while hiking

Posted: Updated:

A 50-year-old professor visiting Arizona from Spain died of heat exhaustion on Wednesday afternoon while hiking Table Top Mountain.

Wednesday about 4:30 p.m., the Pinal County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call about a man who passed out while hiking. The victim and two colleagues were visiting for a convention when they set out for a day hike.

The three men started the 3 1/2-mile hike up the trail Wednesday morning. Once they reached the top, they stopped for lunch. On the way back down, the 50-year-old collapsed. He was unable to walk and was disoriented.

His friends attempted to carry the man down the remainder of the trail, but he lost consciousness. One of the men ran to get help, while the other administered CPR.

Search and rescue and emergency medial units arrived. The man was pronounced dead.

Deputies say the men did have water but it was not enough for the extreme summer heat. The man had eventually stopped breathing.

His name has not been released.
