Weather Damage In Delaware And South Jersey

Posted: Updated:
PAULSBORO, N.J. -

It was a big one-two weather punch for people who live in parts of Delaware and South Jersey tonight.

The torrential rains have moved out but left behind a big mess.

If it wasn't the sound of generators filling the air, then it was chainsaws and wood chippers.

It was that kind of day.

"We heard a lot of wind. a lot of thunder, a lot of lightning."

Nancy Cropper OF Hockessin, Delaware spent the day with the no power.

But that was the least of her problems.

"Power went out. We knew we needed a generator set up. Opened the door and there was a tree!"

A large tree had snapped and came crashing down on the family car that was up for sale.

Roads across New Castle County were closed. Falling trees downed power lines. And crews from Delmarva Power spent the day restoring service.

"About an inch of rain in about 10 or 12 minutes."

Then the afternoon storm came. Saturating rains passing through Delaware into South Jersey, making driving on some roads nearly impossible.

Winds toppled this 100 year old locust tree. Ripping the power meter right off a home in Gibbstown, Gloucester County.

"It was raining so hard I couldn't see my neighbors house 200 feet away," said a resident.

Many veteran truck drivers spent the day at this truck stop saying the weather was so bad that they had to pull over.

According to Vince Yearwood, "It was pretty windy. Real hard rain. I jumped out of the truck and ran inside."

"You are taking a chance. Sometimes you have to pull over stop and let it dissipate," said another truck driver.

There are still scattered power outages across Delaware and New Jersey.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
