8th Street Building Collapse Evacuates Residents

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

According to Philadelphia Police, a partial building collapse happened Monday night at Eighth and South streets.

A day-long downpour is to blame for the wall collapse in South Philadelphia. At least six properties have been evacuated for at least overnight.

A lot was being excavated, but heavy rains washed away soil underneath causing the ground to give in. Saturating afternoon rains were too much for the ground to handle. An Eighth street construction site was turned into a mudslide.

Officials say the excavation was too close to a retaining wall, and the rain washed away dirt away from it.

The rear mosaic walls of several properties on South Street collapsed into a hole. A utility pole and wires attached also fell in.

Tara Retson is one of more than a dozen residents evacuated. She only had time to gather her dogs.

"I certainly can't go home this evening. It's unknown how long until we can go home. It looks like the back walls of the buildings next to us collapsed," she said.

Police say the big concern is the integrity of the street. You can't see it, but police tell us rains are also washing away the dirt underneath Eighth Street, forcing police to start towing cars away from the area for safety reasons.

Police tell FOX 29 that SEPTA has rerouted route 47, and the 600 block south of 8th street is closed to traffic.

We will bring you the latest information as soon as it becomes available.
