Investigating Grand Jury To Probe Building Collapse, D.A. Says

Posted: Updated:

Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams has ordered an investigating grand jury to probe the Center City building collapse last week that killed six and injured 14.

Over the weekend, the man accused in connection with Wednesday's tragedy was denied bail.

Sean Benschop is facing six counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the collapse. Police say he had drugs in his system, as he operated a piece of heavy machinery at the demolition site.

Williams said he held Monday's news conference to formally announce the charges, the potential for which had leaked out Friday, and assure the public that "all aspects of this collapse will be investigated."

Williams says there will not be a "rush to judgment.". City agencies will be probed as well as the contractor and property owner at 22nd and Market streets.

Attorneys for some of the victims of last week's building collapse had a chance to look at the site Saturday. At least one civil lawsuit has already been filed.

The Philadelphia City Council also announced, Monday afternoon, an investigative committee to review city regulations and procedures in the wake of the collapse.

The Special Investigative Committee will be tasked with a broad review of city procedures and regulations in the areas of licenses and permits, community and development, construction and demolition, building maintenance and safety, and certification of workers.
