DETROIT (WJBK) -

Whole Foods in Detroit is now open and customers are invited in for a daylong celebration.

The festivities scheduled for Wednesday include performances by a bagpipe player, marching band and string quartet as well as remarks from U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, Mayor Dave Bing and others.

Shoppers will be treated a free Whole Foods shopping bag on Wednesday, along with a variety of local products, according to Red Elk Banks, executive operations coordinator at Whole Foods Market. "We built the store with Detroit in mind."

The Austin, Texas-based chain's newest store will help fill a grocery void in the area. Detroiters long have complained about not having enough places to buy fresh fruit, vegetables and produce.

It's located in the city's Midtown neighborhood near Mack Ave. and John R.

Banks says the store will sell products from 47 local vendors, including a microbrew from Atwater Brewing Company that will only be sold at the Detroit location.
