The New York Rangers have fired head coach John Tortorella.

The NHL team made the conference finals last year and started off the season with big hopes, but after a disappointing play-off run it appeared Tortorella's job was on the line.

The Rangers were eliminated in five games by the Boston Bruins.

Tortorella was let go on Wednesday, after five seasons with the team and one year left on his contract.

The combative coach, who was hired to replace Tom Renney in February 2009, achieved some success with the Rangers but couldn't match the Stanley Cup title he earned in 2004 with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Last season, Tortorella led the Rangers to 51 wins -- the second-most in franchise history -- and 109 points before they were beaten by New Jersey in the conference finals.

Tortorella got the Rangers back into the playoffs in this lockout-shortened season, and New York outlasted Washington in seven games in the first round of the playoffs before being knocked out by Boston.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

With the All-Star break over and the second half of the MLB season well underway, the New York Mets (46-52 as of July 20) and the New York Yankees (50-47 as of July 20) find themselves in the same situations each team is accustomed to at this time of the season. The Yankees are in the middle of the AL East Division title while the Mets are scrapping for every win possible to stay relevant in the NL East. But while the record says one thing, reality says another.
