Weather improves for events to continue on Memorial Day weekend

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Sunday was not the type of weather most had hoped for this Memorial Day weekend, but it was certainly better than Saturday's weather.

The sun decided to shine and temperatures warmed up enough for people to head outside and enjoy what's left of the holiday weekend.

Feels more like fall than the unofficial start of summer! But regardless, throngs of people are ringing in Memorial Day weekend at the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach.

From the twists, to the turns – there was no shortage of terrific thrills at the tenth annual Bethpage Air Show.

"I like when they did the tricks in the air. They were racing at the end," said one young viewer.

"Really cool!"

"We absolutely love it!" said Tina Urban.

The Urban family from Ronkonkoma showed their American pride while watching the sky.

"It's just a great event. It honors all the men and women who've served in our armed forces through the years," said Ron Urban.

This year, the U.S. Military could not participate in the annual air show because of the federal budget cuts -- known as the Sequester. However, that didn't stop the Royal Canadian Air Force F-18 demo team from flying, as well as civilian performers like David Windmiller.

"It's great looking down and seeing everyone having a great time," said pilot David Windmiller.

Sunday afternoon in Queens, the annual Forest Hills Memorial Day parade brought out the young and the old to remember those who died serving our county –- and celebrate America.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg marched as well as other city officials.

In Coney Island, the boardwalk was packed but fewer people hit the beach.

Some people braved the cold temps and decided to try out the water. Others took advantage of the windy weather by flying their kites.

"It's actually a great day for the beach. It's a heck of a lot better than the last couple of days," said Bob Cleary of Princeton, NJ.

For people affected by Superstorm Sandy, coming back to Coney Island this holiday weekend has even more meaning.

"Now that I see it, everything up and running, it makes me so happy."

At the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, many people are celebrating being back at the beach again since many Long Island beaches took a beating in Superstorm Sandy.

Many of those beachgoers are hoping for nice weather again on Monday.
