Central Texas' longest living heart transplant recipient celebrates 25 years

Twenty-five years ago Austin resident Twain Schieffer received a life-saving heart transplant at Seton Medical Center.

Friday, they celebrated his 25th re-birthday.

Schieffer was 56-years-old when he experience heart failure 25-years-ago. He was given a temporary mechanical heart assist device and had only 24 to 48 hours to live when he was told he would be getting his transplant.

A 16-year-old Missouri boy was killed in a car accident and his family made the selfless decision to donate his organs.

Schieffer keeps a picture of this special young man with him every day.

The Texas Organ Sharing Alliance says Schieffer is the longest living heart transplant recipient in Central Texas.

Schieffer and his wife, Latrelle, have been married for 63 years and have two children, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
