Honda Center: 400 Food Service Employees Being Laid Off

Honda Center: 400 Food Service Employees Being Laid Off

Posted: Updated:

400 food service employees at the Honda Center are being laid off and 500 new employees are being hired in their place.  The layoff notices say the last day of employment will be June 30th.

"It was like a punch in the gut.", said Xenia Galaviz.

Galaviz has worked at the Honda Center for more than 18 years.  Her husband works there too.  The food service employees are being laid off because the contract ended for company they worked for.   The new company taking over at the Honda center, Anaheim Arena Management wants to hire new employees. Those who are losing their jobs say it's a move to reduce wages and cut benefits. Plus, the City of Anaheim provides  tax credits for company's hiring new employees.  Credits worth up to $37,000 per employee over a five year period.

But the head of Anaheim Arena Management issued the following statement:

"To make the record perfectly clear, our decision to take food service in-house was based solely on our relentless pursuit of giving our customers the very best entertainment experience possible. It had nothing to do with California Enterprise Zone tax credits, which we never had any intention of utilizing."

Anaheim Arena says they welcome those who are being laid off to reapply. Just go to the Honda Center website and make an appointment for an interview.

So far, Anaheim Arena Management has received nearly 2,000 applications.
