The Talker: New reality show lets employees vote to fire co-workers

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Reality television may have become more real than ever tonight. Would you be on a show where you and your co-workers get to see each other's salaries, then vote on who should be put up for firing?

Unlike Donald Trump and "The Apprentice," this is your real job and your real, regular life. If you hear the words, "you're fired," you're out of your job and your real income.

Tonight's episode was about a Downers Grove company, Velocity Merchant Services. The company helps small businesses process credit card payments and is reported to have 70 employees.

Workers were given the choice to be on the show or not. About 20 said yes and put their whole careers in the hands of each other.

Velocity Merchant Service's regular bosses are a married couple. Dema Barakat is the company founder and her husband, Danoush, is the CEO.

As for why they put their company on TV, they told FOX 32 News they have "personnel issues." The issues are complicated by the fact that they employ at least four other family members and say all the other workers are people they grew up with.

They say TV show has been a positive.

"Yeah it was a positive experience at the end of the day," Dema said. "I feel our employees were very brave for being able to do this show and I think it turns out really good."
