How to make your yard sale a huge hit

Posted: Updated:

You've probably been to a yard sale or two in your life, and you might have found some great deals.  But would you know how to get the most out of your own yard sale?  Good Day's Tacoma Perry talked to an expert who shared some great tips for how to make your yard sale a huge hit.

Gali Hefetz says she started going to garage sales a few years ago when she came to the United States from Israel.  She bought what she needed to furnish her home, and toys for her girls.

Now she's having a garage sale of her own.  Monica Ricci of Catalyst Organizing says having a yard sale is the ultimate win-win.

"When the weather is good, it's a great way to have fun with your neighbors and family, decluttter your house, and make a little bit of cash," said Ricci.

But if you're going to do it, do it right.  Monica says you should advertise on Craigslist or in the local paper.  Once that's done, pay attention to your signs.

"You've got to have a sign that's big enough to be legible from far away as people are traveling by," said Ricci.  "Put the date on your sign.  I can't tell you how many times I've seen ‘Garage Sale Today.'  I don't know if that was there from last week."

Also, Ricci says you should have multiple signs that lead people to your home.  And when it comes to the sale itself, use all your space—not just the garage.

"Entice them, draw them," she suggests.  "Items for men, items for women.  Put some kids' items down near the street where they can see you.  You want to lure them up so then you can engage them."

And once you get them there, close the deal.  And price cheap!  Ricci says no one will care if you paid $35 for your coffee pot.  They could buy a new one for that price, so aim for 10, 20 or 30 percent of what you paid for it.  And, make sure you put that bargain price where it's easy to see.
