CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (AP) - Representatives of Pinal County and the federal government have started discussing the possibility of renegotiating the county's money-losing contract to house federal immigration detainees in the county jail in Florence.
The Casa Grande Dispatch reports that an initial meeting was held last week in Washington.
Several sheriff's officials drew to Washington for the meeting while Board of Supervisors Chairman Steve Miller and County Manager Fritz Behring two county officials participating via conference call.
The outcome was that county officials will send a formal proposal for a revised control to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but a federal board will have the final say.
Behring says it will take several weeks for the county and its consultants to prepare the proposal.
