The principal of Paredes Middle School sent a letter home on Monday informing them that a student was found on campus with marijuana and an unloaded gun.
Principal Karla Wright wrote in the letter that an Austin ISD police officer noticed three students behaving suspiciously. According to Wright, the officer found the one of the students had a small amount of marijuana and an unloaded gun.
District officials confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh grader was found by an officer with marijuana and an unloaded 9mm handgun. He was taken to Gardner Betts Juvenile Justice Center and charged with a third degree felony.
When the suspect turns 18 he can petition to have the charges removed from his record, essentially giving him a fresh start.
The school was not locked down because police believed there was no safety threat.
