Night Out in the Parks brings culture to neighborhood parks in Chicago

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Mayor Emanuel announced new summer activities for the city of Chicago on Tuesday, which will be part of the Night Out in the Parks program.

The mayor's office said it will include more than 750 cultural performances throughout the summer.

These include expansions of the Movies, Circus and Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks programs. New music concerts will also be held in Grant Park.

"We have beautiful neighborhoods and beautiful parks, unprecedented in the country," Emanuel said. "It's about getting tourists and others to come into our neighborhoods, to experience what we all know is here. This crown jewel (Garfield Park Conservatory) is not just a great lawn, but a great place to see Taming of the Shrew.

"It's a great place to see all our different theater and cultural events and institutions that go throughout our neighborhoods, part of our neighborhoods, have them part of our city," Emanuel continued. "So all families regardless of where you live, regardless of your zip code, will have a night out in the park that will be safe and family friendly."

Some $750,000 of the funding for that program is coming from private funds left over from last year's NATO summit.

All events and activities in the Night Out in the Park program will be offered free of charge.
