Nation's largest food drive kicks off this weekend

Posted: Updated:

Leave the heaving lifting to your letter carrier. This Saturday, you can help Stamp Out Hunger by taking part in the nation's largest one day food drive.

The non-perishable items collected in the Austin area help fill the shelves at the Capital Area Food Bank. The CAFB works with 300 different agencies and covers 21 counties.

Place the items by your mailbox and your letter carrier will leave your mail and take the food.

It's the 21st year for the campaign. Last year more than 70 million pounds were collected for food banks across the country.

The drive exists because one letter carrier had the idea and took it upon himself to make it happen.

"When it went national, it really ended up where it is today. Where all the branches in all the states participate in the program and the whole purpose of the drive was to fill the pantries in your community. When it went national we created something enormous," explained David Velazquez, who is the national coordinator for the campaign.

H-E-B provides donation bags which were placed in mailboxes, but you can use any sturdy bag.
