President Obama stops at 'Stubbs' and has ribs with Austinites

The crowds lined up at the Omni Hotel on Thursday afternoon hoping to catch a glimpse of President Obama's motorcade.

"I'm just hoping he sees me waving 'hi' to him," said Austin eighth grader, Arik Olivarez.

"I just want to see him, hopefully I can get to shake his hand! Just give him a hug...and Michelle won't get mad at me," Shonda Scales joked.

Police and Secret Service were everywhere. And snipers took to the rooftops to keep an eye on him from up there.

There was a little bit of trouble... One young man dressed up in a black "V For Vendetta" type mask and carried a backpack.

The Secret Service checked his ID and nothing ever came of it.

Right before the President went to the Omni, he made a little pit stop at Stubbs. Hey even the President's gotta eat.

Caroline Sweet is a teacher at Metz Elementary and a member of the local teachers union.

She was selected to sit down with a small group of Austinites and have lunch with the man.

"We were very diverse. There was a nurse, a dry-waller, a hair dresser and me! And so it was just the four of us and the President at lunch and he actually like picked up the check and pulled out a wad of money and paid," she said.

The President discussed some serious issues with the group but he seemed to enjoy the food too.

"He ate a whole plate of ribs, he used the hot sauce and not the Stubbs barbecue sauce so we were like 'What?'" Sweet said.

Sweet got the opportunity to tell the President how she feels about teacher salaries and charter schools.

"I don't know, I just don't know why it was me and not anybody else. But I'm so appreciative of the opportunity. I'm so grateful that I had the chance to tell him the things I think about education, I mean that's a really rare once in a lifetime opportunity and I'm so lucky that it happened to me," Sweet said.

Right after lunch, the President made his way over to the Omni to speak with business leaders from Capital Factory.

He waved to the crowd who had been patiently waiting.

President Obama stayed about 45 minutes and left the Omni around 4.
