Austin Police have arrested Drexell Washington, 21, and charged him with the murder of Reynaldo Ortega on April 9.

Police were called to the Cameron Greens apartment complex in the 5700 block of Cameron Road just after 9:00 PM on April 9 to investigate a double shooting.

One of the victims, Ortega, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another victim was critically injured and transported to the hospital. That victim told investigators that a man had tried to rob him of his cell phone and money.

Investigators also watched video surveillance footage from the night of the shooting. They say it shows the suspect struggle with Ortega and climb into his car before shooting him.

Police searched the victim's car for evidence and then released it to Ortega's brother. A few days later, the victim's brother called police to inform them he found a piece of torn fingernail inside the car while cleaning it. Ortega's fingernails were intact at the time of his death and police ruled out that the fingernail belonged to his brother.

Investigators say they were able to match the DNA obtained from the fingernail to Washington who was in the Travis County Jail after being arrested on April 19. According to court documents, Washington was interviewed and denied being at the apartment complex the night of the shooting.
