Could your favorite lipstick or gloss be toxic?

A new study says you may want to think twice before trying to perfect that pout. Researchers are warning women about a beauty product found in every makeup bag: lipstick. They discovered "troubling levels of toxic metals" in many of the cosmetics.

Researchers at the University of California - Berkeley tested 32 lipsticks and glosses commonly found at convenience stores and department stores. They found average use of some of them would result in excessive exposure to chromium, a carcinogen linked to stomach tumors. They say that high use could result in potential overexposure to certain metals, like aluminum.

Fox 5's Dr. Manny Alvarez says the problem is if you use too much of it.

"If you're a heavy user, you're applying like 12 times a day, you're probably ingesting 84 mls of lipstick and that of course can be quite toxic especially we're talking brands that have high levels of these heavy metals," he says.

The Personal Care Products Council, which represents the global cosmetics industry, disputes the research. Their chief toxicologist says: "The finding of trace levels of metals in lip products is not unexpected given their natural presence in air, soil and water. Very low levels are also found in drinking water and food."

For many ladies this study is not enough to toss the gloss.

Dr. Alvarez does recommend going natural if you can by using lipsticks or glosses that are 100 percent organic or pure. He says they do not have any additives.

John and Chris DiCapua's sitting room in their parents' Westchester County home has had a unique guest lying around for quite a while now: a CPR dummy. What began as an idea from their time as Boy Scouts is now a device that could potentially save lives.
