Suspected arsonist in fire at Ferndale's John D caught on camera

FERNDALE, Mich. (WJBK) -

John D Bistro in Ferndale is open for business, but the owner put his life on the line Friday night when someone tried to set his business on fire.  Now investigators are search for an arsonist.

"I go running back there thinking something that was small.  It turned out to be my whole rear curtain was up in flames," said Eddie Farah.  "These are fireproof curtains that I have.  They're not just going to go up."

Unless someone sets them on fire.  Surveillance video from a restaurant next door shows a man walking toward the restaurant as if he is going inside.  But instead he stands behind the curtain, runs off and the fireproof curtains slowly catch fire.  At first, no one notices, but the fire spreads and quickly gets out of control.

Farah rushed outside to fight the blaze, but it nearly overtook him.

"Covered my face, jumped through the fire to get to outside because I was choking.  I couldn't find my way back to the door," he said.

Farah fractured his leg and has burns, but he knows on a packed Friday night, this could have been a lot worse.

"Somebody could've got really hurt," he said.

Thankfully, firefighters arrived quickly and the fire never spread into the restaurant or caused any damage.  But the question remains, who started the fire?  Hopefully police will catch that person before they do it again.

"I don't care how mad you are, or I don't know what your reasoning behind it is.  There must have been a moment where you should've been like wait, stop, this isn't right," Farah said.

There is a $5,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest.  If you know anything, call Ferndale Police.
