Suspects arrested in connection with North Austin robberies

Posted: Updated:

An Austin man who was shot in the leg by a teen robber talks with FOX 7. That teen is in jail tonight and so is his accomplice. It's an update to a story we first brought you Monday.

Alikhan Kibarov says what happened to him early Monday morning could have been so much worse. A teen robber shot him in the leg. He's been in the hospital ever since.

"I can't walk right now, but it's alright," he said.

Kibarov is in exceptionally good spirits considering his frighteningly close brush with death. It happened just after he closed the Texaco station in Northwest Austin where he works as a clerk.

"My leg was outside [of my car door] and the door was opened and I was just on my phone, you know, waiting for my car to heat up," Kibarov said.

He says a young guy came up to him with a shotgun. At one point it was inches from his head. Austin police released this surveillance video of the teen walking in and out of the store.

"When I looked at his face, his eyeballs were big and he was going with the gun like this. I wasn't sure if he was going to shoot me in the face or the body. I was scared of that," said Kibarov.

Kibarov says the teen demanded cash, but he didn't have any.

"I saw him backing up almost being ready to shoot me. I saw his finger go like that so I grabbed, it was a rifle I think, long rifle so I grabbed his weapon and pulled it down like that and exactly when I touched it he shoot and it gets my leg right here," Kibarov said. "I touched it and saw that it's bleeding really crazy, there was blood all over my car."

Police say Kibarov was the robber's second victim. Forty minutes prior, officers say the teen robbed a man walking along West Parmer Lane.

On Wednesday, the teen was arrested and so was 29-year-old Marek Dillard. Officers say Dillard was the get-away driver. Both were charged with two counts of aggravated robbery.

Officers are withholding the name of the teen because he is under the age of 17.

Kibarov got the good news just after he finished the interview. He's looking forward to getting on with his life.
