Groundbreaking held for new addition to Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
A new addition to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is well on its way to an opening next spring.
The groundbreaking was held Wednesday morning for the Luci Baines Johnson and Ian Turpin family garden.
The new area will be 4.5 acres of woodland and meadow that blends nature, learning, and play for the ultimate interactive experience.
Garden designer and landscape architect W. Gary Smith says children aren't going to be learning like they would at a museum.
"We agreed very early on that there's not gonna be a lot of big signs, explaining what you're looking at. There'll be a lot of education going on here, a lot of programmed activities, but the kind of education that's really going to be primary is the kind of education that we had when we were children, just playing in the woods," said Smith.
Funding for this project has already reached the $4 million mark but $1 million is still needed.
