TX Senate approves guns in cars on college campuses

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas college students who are licensed to carry concealed handguns would be allowed to keep their guns locked in their cars in campus parking lots under a bill advancing in the Legislature.

In a 27-4 vote Tuesday, the state Senate approved a bill that would override rules adopted by several universities. Under current law, universities can post a sign prohibiting guns like any private property owner.

Republican Sen. Glenn Hegar of Katy said the current restrictions unfairly single out college students.

During a debate on the Senate floor, Democratic Sen. Jose Rodriguez of El Paso argued the bill would lead to allowing guns in college classrooms.

Hegar promised not to use the bill for that purpose, but a bill to do that has been scheduled for a House vote Saturday.
