Detroit Goodfellows Gives Thanks to Detroit Public Schools With
Fourth Annual Goodfellow Teacher of the Year Contest

Students have the opportunity to nominate their favorite teacher

DETROIT, April 16, 2013 - Now in its fourth year, The Old Newsboys' Goodfellow Fund of Detroit's Goodfellow Teacher of the Year contest is underway! Detroit Goodfellows sponsors the contest to show its sincere appreciation and gratitude to Detroit Public School administrators, teachers and support staff who, each year, work so diligently to identify students in need of its holiday gift packages.  The 99-year-old charity's mission is to ensure there is "No Kiddie Without a Christmas."

Students in grades 3 through 8 at a Detroit Public School can nominate their favorite teacher for the Goodfellow Teacher of the Year recognition by answering the question: "Why is your teacher so special?" in 50 words or less.

The winning "Favorite Teacher" will receive a plaque, a prize pack from the Detroit Goodfellows which will include a gift card for school supplies for his or her classroom, and will be named the "Fourth Annual DPS Detroit Goodfellows Teacher of the Year." The winning teacher will also be acknowledged at the Detroit Goodfellows Annual Tribute Breakfast this fall.  Additionally, the winning student will receive a Barnes and Noble gift card and a pizza party "surprise" for his or her classroom, courtesy of the Detroit Goodfellows.

Nomination forms are now available online at the Detroit Goodfellows web site, <>.  Entries may be returned to this website or may be returned by mail to the Detroit Goodfellows PO Box 44444, Detroit, MI 48244.   All nominations must be received no later than May 24, 2013.

The Goodfellows Board of Directors will review all nominations and will select a winning teacher by June 4, 2013.  The winner and nominating student will receive "surprise notification" in the classroom in early June.

Last year's winner of the third annual Goodfellow Teacher of the Year contest was Mark Ragis, an English teacher at Clippert Academy, in Detroit. Ragis had been at the school for two years and with DPS for twenty.  The winning nomination from student Evelyn Sanchez described Mr. Ragis as special for being very patient, nice and funny.

Founded in 1914, the Detroit Goodfellows is the original and oldest Goodfellow organization and is not affiliated with any other Goodfellow group. It also sponsors an emergency dental program for children, awards scholarships through Wayne State University, provides free shoes to children in need and helps send hundreds of needy children to camp each summer.
